Our neighborhood
Slavic Village, Cleveland
We did not move to the neighborhood. We grew up in it, and we have stayed.
Fleet Avenue is the main street of Cleveland’s Slavic Village, the southeast-side neighborhood built by Polish and Czech families around the mills and the churches of Broadway and East 55th. Its storefronts have held bakeries, taverns, hardware stores, and the kind of small professional offices a neighborhood runs on.
Commercial Enterprises has been one of those offices for decades. Henry Domzalski Sr. opened the firm in 1952; the storefront at 5720 Fleet Avenue and the phone number on its awning are the same ones in the 1984 photograph above. The grandchildren of the firm’s first clients still walk through that door.
A neighborhood accounting office does more than returns. It is where a new restaurant owner learns what a vendor’s license is, where a retiree brings a confusing letter from the state, and where a landlord with two doubles on East 59th finds out what a depreciation schedule looks like. That has been our part in Slavic Village’s development, one small business and one family at a time.
